CHICAGO, IL – Here’s something most people don’t think about. A carpet is basically a filter. A really big one that covers the entire floor. And just like any filter, if it’s not cleaned out, all that trapped stuff like dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and bacteria starts going right back into the air that is breathed in.
Vytas Macius has owned Carpet Cleaning Group on Chicago’s Northwest Side since 2014. He hears the same thing from customers almost every time they call.
“They’ll say, hey, I’ve got this stain I need taken care of. Or the carpet just looks worn out. And yeah, we fix that. But when I explain what’s actually living down in those fibers? That’s usually when people go quiet for a second.”
His go-to method is steam carpet cleaning Chicago, or hot water extraction if one wants the technical name. Hot water and pressure go deep into the carpet. Then strong suction pulls it all back out, along with whatever was buried down there. No chemical solvents involved. Nothing left behind that’s going to attract new dirt next week.
There’s a reason some carpets seem to get dirty again right after a cleaning. Most traditional methods use detergents that leave a thin film down in the fibers. One can’t see it or feel it, but dirt and dust stick to it like velcro. Two weeks later the carpet looks worse than before and people blame the carpet. Steam skips all of that. It’s just hot water and suction. Nothing left behind. So the carpet doesn’t have that sticky layer pulling in new grime every time someone walks across it.
The EPA has said indoor air can actually be more polluted than outdoor air. Think about that in a Chicago winter. Windows sealed shut from November through March, maybe April. Five or six months where the carpet is just collecting everything and the air in the home has nowhere to go. Old greystones, newer condos, it doesn’t matter. If there’s carpet in the home and the windows haven’t been open in months, there’s buildup down there.
“I’ve got customers with kids who play on the floor all day,” Macius said. “Or a dog who basically lives on the carpet. They don’t always connect that with the sneezing or the stuffy feeling in the house. Once we do a steam clean and they notice the difference, that’s when it clicks.”
He said allergy season is when the phone really picks up. Spring in Chicago means pollen counts spike, and for people who are already dealing with dust and pet dander trapped in their carpet, it just piles on. A deep steam cleaning right before or during allergy season takes a big chunk of that irritant load out of the home.
The company switched to all eco-friendly carpet cleaning products a while back. Plant-based, non-toxic, the whole deal. Macius said it wasn’t a hard decision.
“My guys are working with this stuff every single day. My customers’ kids are rolling around on it. Why would I use anything harsh if I don’t have to? The green products do the same job. We tested a bunch before committing and haven’t looked back.”
That shift toward greener products has come up more and more with customers too, according to Macius. Families with newborns, people with pets, older residents with respiratory issues. They want to know what’s being sprayed in their home. Being able to tell them it’s all plant-based and non-toxic takes a weight off the conversation.
