Feature Documentary Chronicles the Award-Winning Reporter Los Angeles Has Trusted for 50 Years
LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — For half a century, when wildfires erupted, earthquakes struck, riots spread, or gunfire shattered the calm, Pete Demetriou moved toward the danger—microphone in hand.
Now, the legendary Los Angeles radio journalist and 27-time Golden Mike Award winner will be the subject of General Assignment: LA, a feature-length documentary currently in production.
Produced by Roy Bodner’s independent production company, Freedonia, the film follows Demetriou in the field, where his urgent, precise reporting has helped millions of Southern Californians understand unfolding emergencies and avoid danger.
“Radio news allows me to provide an instant interpretation of my surroundings—frequently a first rough draft of history as it is being made in Los Angeles—and in only 55 seconds or less,” Demetriou said.
During the past year, Bodner’s production team has documented Demetriou covering breaking stories under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. Drawing upon his earlier experience as a Middle East war correspondent, Demetriou has reported from wildfires, riots, bomb scares and shooting scenes—often wearing a bulletproof vest while working alongside police officers, firefighters and emergency officials.
The documentary is directed by Greg Zekowski, a Los Angeles-based producer, director, and member of both the Directors Guild of America and the Television Academy.
“For the first time, audiences will see how radio reporting relies upon a descriptive, immediate and hard-hitting style that connects listeners with accurate coverage of events directly affecting their lives,” Zekowski said.
Zekowski’s recent credits include the Oscar-shortlisted short film The Anne Frank Gift Shop, On Fire, starring William H. Macy, and the Emmy-nominated The Walking Dead: Red Machete.
Bodner previously produced the feature films Dance, Baby Dance and Diamond Zero and co-produced Redemption. His career also includes executive roles at Peace Arch Entertainment and E! Entertainment Television, as well as work with Disney Consumer Products, Universal Studios, Panasonic, Variety, and the Los Angeles Times.
News producer Alexandra Datig and Front Page Index are providing location production and editing. General Assignment: LA is being presented in cooperation with Los Angeles radio station KNX and its parent company, Audacy Corporation.
The film will launch a planned Freedonia documentary series profiling English-language news professionals whose reporting makes a meaningful difference in the world.
